Regents and Rulers of Hainault and the Flanders

Updated 23 March 2008.

Flandern, engelsk Flanders, betyder det oversvømmede land. Det er landet og folkene, der fra omkring 800-tallet nævnes i kilderne, som området i Nord- og Vestbelgien og strækkende sig ind i Frankrigs nordligste del.

I middelalderen dækkede det områder i samme område med navne som Flandern, noget af Artois og det sydligste af hollandske Zeeland, der inden inddæmningerne var et udstrakt ørige. Mod øst grænsede det op til Hainault og Brabant.

Det var organiseret som et grevskab.

Belgien blev et selvstændigt kongerige fra 4/10 1830. Riget blev sammenstukket af områder, der i historiens løb havde været forenede i forskellige kombinationer.
