Området Burgunds territoriale historie

Burgund - engelsk Burgundy - har gennem tiderne dækket et eller flere områder i det østlige Frankrig fra Middelhavet og mod nord ind i Luxemburg og Flandern og Holland. I dag udgøres de oprindelige sydfranske, burgundiske landsdele af departementet Bourgogne og området Franche Comté ind mod Schweiz' grænse.

Kort efter år 400 blev området invaderet af et germansk folkeslag, der kaldtes burgundere. De oprettede noget senere deres hovedsæde i Lyon. Området blev senere af frankerne erobret og endnu senere under Karl den Store lagt ind under hans rige. Da Karls rige blev opløst ved Verdunforliget i 843 kom Burgund til at ligge i både vestregionen og midterregionen i den tredelte separation. De vestligste dele blev et hertugdømme i Vestfranken, men den østlige del blev en del af Lothringen. Den østlige del blev ved Lothringens sammenbrud i 879 et kongedømme under Boso. Hans efterkommere tabte den nordligste del til de tyske Welfer, men blev atter forenet i 933.

Fra 1032 indgik de centrale områder - fra Clairvaux til Cluny - i Det tysk-romerske Rige, hvis tre hovedriger derefter var Tyskland, Norditalien med Lombardiet samt kongeriget Burgund.

I historien optræder en del andre navne for området, der i det store hele er et kludetæppe af små og større erobrede områder og arvede områder. I det 11. århundrede Er Øvre Burgund - Upper Burgundy området mellem Besançon og Basel. Lige syd for deler Jurabjergene landet i en østlig del Transjuranske Burgund = Højburgund - Transjurane Burgundy og en vestlig del, Cisjuranske Burgund - Cisjurane Burgundy = County of Burgund. De to områder gik mod syd til omkring Geneve. Syd derfor kom så Nedre Burgund - Lower Burgundy.

En overgang i 1200-tallet kaldtes dets sydlige del kongeriget Arles eller Kongeriget Arelat - Kingdom of Arles = Kingdom of Provence. Den østlige del - ud for Jurabjergene - dannede Franche Comté - ca. Det cisjuranske Burgund. I hele middelalderen kaldtes området, der ikke indgik i Frankrig, for Burgund eller kongeriget Burgund.

Den vestligste del forblev i Det franske Kongerige som et hertugdømme - Duchy of Burgund - under Capetiske herskere og senere under Valois-herskerne.

Franche Comté blev domineret af flere slægter - en overgang af Hohenstaufere, men fra 1405 også af en Valois-hertug. Fra 1400-tallet under Valoiserne havde de i mange år fyrstemagten også i Holland. Valoisernes mandlige linje uddøde i 1477, hvorefter det østlige område overgik til Habsburgske fyrster, mens det vestlige indgik i Det franske Kongedømme.

Historien er i detaljer noget mere kompliceret, men til dynastisk brug kan den korte oversigt gøre nogenlunde fyldest. Her er en separat tekst om Burgund.

France annexed Burgundy in 1477; however,
Mary was still Duchess and her husband, Maximilian,
also took the title to the Habsburgers.

As France had occupied most of the duchy, the title was only titular.

The other parts of Mary's territories were the Netherlands,
the Free County of Burgundy towards the Swiss Alps and within the Holy Roman German realm
forming a part of the Burgundy Circle of Maximilian's electorial partition.
